Structured Family Caregiving in Troup County, Georgia

Families in LaGrange, West Point, Hogansville and across Troup County can be paid by Georgia Medicaid to care for a loved one at home. The program is Structured Family Care, and Freedom Adult Care serves Troup County families from our office in Columbus.

Getting Paid to Care for a Loved One in Troup County

Structured Family Care pays a family member, whether an adult child, a sibling, a daughter-in-law or a grandchild, to provide the daily care their loved one needs at home, instead of that care coming from a rotating outside aide or a nursing facility. You get training, ongoing support from a care team, and a weekly stipend that’s generally tax-free.

Freedom Adult Care is a family-owned provider that has served west Georgia for more than 23 years. We’re based in Columbus, up the I-185 corridor from LaGrange, and Troup County is one of the 20 counties we cover.

Who Qualifies in Troup County

Georgia Medicaid sets the requirements, and they’re the same statewide:

• Your loved one has active Georgia Medicaid and is enrolled in the CCSP or SOURCE waiver
• They need a nursing-home level of care, generally 5 or more hours of personal support a day
• You and your loved one live at the same address
• You’re a family member by blood or marriage, but not their spouse or legal guardian
• You’re 18 or older and pass a background check, which the program pays for

How Troup County Families Start the Process: This Is Different Here

Before Structured Family Care can start, your loved one has to be assessed and enrolled in a Georgia Medicaid waiver. That assessment is handled by your regional Area Agency on Aging, and Troup County’s is not the same one that serves Columbus.

Columbus and most of west Georgia go through the River Valley Area Agency on Aging. Troup County goes through the Three Rivers Area Agency on Aging, also called Southern Crescent, based in Franklin, which covers Troup along with Meriwether, Coweta, Carroll, Heard and several other counties to the north and east.

This trips families up regularly, because most information written about Structured Family Care in this part of Georgia assumes the Columbus office. If you’ve called and been told you’re in the wrong service area, that’s probably what happened, and it doesn’t mean you don’t qualify.

The simplest way through it is to call Georgia’s Aging and Disability Resource Connection at 1-866-552-4464, which routes you to the right regional office based on where you live. Or call us and we’ll point you to the correct one. We work with both.

Questions from Troup County Families

Why does my Area Agency on Aging matter?
It is the office that assesses your loved one and enrolls them in the CCSP or SOURCE waiver, the step that has to happen before any Structured Family Care can begin. Calling the wrong regional office is the most common reason a Troup County family stalls out early in this process.

Freedom Adult Care is in Columbus. Does that mean slower service up here?
No. The care is provided by you, in your own home, every day, not by someone driving out to deliver it. Our role is training, support, paperwork and paying you on time, and none of that depends on the distance between LaGrange and Columbus.

My loved one already has an aide coming to the house. Do we have to give that up to switch?
You’d be changing who provides the care, not losing the coverage. Approved hours transfer to you as the paid family caregiver. Families usually make this switch because they’d rather the care come from someone who knows their parent than from whoever the agency could staff that week.
